Boston Agrees to Two-Year, $44.2M Extension for Guard Payton Pritchard

Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension that includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season. Austin Brown, CAA co-head of basketball, and agent Max Saidman confirmed the deal on Tuesday.

Pritchard, the 2024 NBA champion and 2025 Sixth Man of the Year, secures a fully guaranteed two-year max extension that keeps him a key long-term piece of the retooled Celtics. The 6-foot-1 guard posted career highs in points (17), assists (5.2) and rebounds (3.9) last season.

Contract details

The extension keeps Pritchard in Boston for one more season beyond his current deal, which ends in 2028. He will earn more than $21 million for the 2028-29 season. The mutual option for 2029-30 is worth nearly $23 million. Either side can opt in to that final season, which also opens the window for extension talks that summer.

Pritchard is currently on a deal that pays him $7.8 million this season and $8.3 million next season.

A bigger role

Pritchard took on a larger role last season, starting 50 games and helping Boston absorb the loss of Jayson Tatum for most of the year. His touches per game rose from 51.8 in 2024-25 to nearly 70 last season, the second-largest increase among the 33 players who recorded at least 4,000 touches in each season.

At 28, Pritchard is one of four players in Celtics history to make at least 200 3-pointers in multiple seasons, joining Tatum, Derrick White and Antoine Walker. He has also been durable throughout his six NBA seasons. His 241 games played over the last three years is tied for the third-most in the league during that span.

Long-term future in Boston

The deal keeps Pritchard in Boston through at least his ninth season with the franchise, and potentially a 10th if the option is picked up. The Celtics drafted him with the No. 26 pick in the 2020 NBA draft.
